Boss pleased with display

David Moyes was pleased with his side’s second-half performance as Manchester United broke down a stubborn Swansea City side to claim a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford and a first win of 2014.

The Reds went into the game on the back of three straight defeats, including an FA Cup loss to the Swans the previous weekend, but gained revenge thanks to strikes from Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck. The sides went in goalless at the break, but a tactical tweak that saw Adnan Januzaj switch to the left wing and Shinji Kagawa come inside behind Welbeck paid dividends for Moyes.

"I thought we played well, especially in the second half. We limited them to very few opportunities and got the result we deserved," the Reds boss told MUTV. “We started the game well and we made a great chance for Danny Welbeck to put us 1-0 up. Then Swansea did what they're good at and we couldn't quite get at them. We altered it a little at half-time and we were much better in the second half.

“We changed one player but I thought we had to run a bit harder than we had in the first half. I didn't think we pressed Swansea as much as I'd have liked. We needed to try and win the ball back sooner. I thought if we could do that then we could disrupt them and get more of the ball ourselves. In the end it worked."

United had chances to extend the lead further with Chris Smalling and Kagawa both going close. Moyes was pleased to see the Reds creating chances but urged the players to be more ruthless in front of goal. “I was screaming at them to keep going forward,” he continued. “I thought if we could get that third goal it would have been great.

"I feel we have to start taking our chances and building our confidence. Once we got the first and second we were in real control but we should have added to our tally. We deserved to score more, but let's hope we're keeping them for later in the season."
